Project Description

“If we can learn to engineer immune hubs, we could supercharge cancer vaccines or immunotherapies.”

The Question

Immune hubs—clusters of immune cells in tumors—are critical to how well a patient fights cancer. But why do some tumors develop strong immune hubs while others don’t?

The Approach

Two years ago, Jackson and his colleagues in the Chen Lab co-developed a technology called Slide-tags, which enabled scientists to map the location of cells within tissues in standard single-cell experiments. Now, Jackson will use Slide-tags to gain a better understanding of how hubs form. Specifically, he’ll apply different combinations of immune-guiding chemical signals and track how they shape hub formation. The resulting data will inform his efforts to engineer immune hubs that can potentially be used in cancer treatments.
