Investing in Innovation
Pioneering science requires visionary philanthropy to maximize its potential. For many Broad Institute researchers, Dr. Richard Merkin, President and CEO of Heritage Provider Network, has exemplified that commitment.
Since 2009, Dr. Merkin has supported both some of the Broad’s most brilliant researchers and several of its most daring initiatives, including the Merkin Institute Fellows and Merkin Institute for Transformative Technologies in Healthcare.
Now, in the latest chapter of his partnership with the Broad, Dr. Merkin announced in October 2021 a new gift to support these existing programs and to establish two new ones: a new international prize for scientists called the Merkin Prize in Biomedical Technology and an endowment called the Merkin Research Fund, which will support promising research directions in fundamental science.
In honor of his visionary giving, the Broad’s main building—415 Main Street—has been named the Richard N. Merkin Building. The building was officially dedicated during a ceremony on October 6, 2021 in Cambridge, Mass. —Kelsey Tsipis
