Probing the Programs of Life

Since its inception in 2004, the Broad Institute has been at the forefront of applying advanced mathematical and computational approaches to biomedical problems. Thanks to a $150 million endowment commitment from Eric and Wendy Schmidt, the Broad will accelerate these efforts with the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center—an initiative launched in March 2021 that seeks to understand the ‘programs of life’ by creating a new field and a community at the interface of machine learning and biology.

From DNA To Big Data

Broad scientists generate 24 terabytes of data every day. That’s the equivalent of 7.4 million photos, 4.8 million pop songs, or 12,000 hours of movies.

How to handle that data is a major hurdle in genomics. How to extract meaning from that data—and turn it into something a physician can use in the clinic—is an even bigger one.How to handle that data is a major hurdle in genomics.
